At Forsyths, we’re committed to keeping our clients informed and protected from financial scams. A new scam has been circulating where fraudsters impersonate the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), or other registration companies, asking individuals and businesses for payments to release funds or assets.

How the Scam Works

Scammers may contact you via email, claiming to be from ASIC or other Registration Companies. They may:

  • Request payment in exchange for releasing your funds or assets
  • Ask for payment in US dollars or cryptocurrency
  • Use fake ASIC branding or logos to appear legitimate

These are known as recovery scams, and they are designed to trick you into handing over money or personal details.
See examples below received by clients recently:

What You Need to Know

  • ASIC does not collect payments to release funds or assets.
  • ASIC will never request payments in any currency, including digital or crypto assets.
  • ASIC does not allow third parties to use its logo or guarantee any services.

How to Protect Yourself

Verify any unsolicited contact – If you receive a call or email from someone claiming to be ASIC, hang up and call ASIC directly on 1300 935 075.

  • Check the email address – ASIC only sends emails from @asic.gov.au addresses.
  • Confirm the caller ID – ASIC will always call from an Australian +61 number.
  • Never send money or pay for fake registration invoices – ASIC does not request payments for releasing funds or assets.
